Singamma Sreenivasan Foundation, a public charitable trust, was founded by Mr. M. A. Sreenivasan and his wife Mrs. Singamma Sreenivasan in the year 1984 and is located in Bangalore, India.
Capacity building, Women's empowerment, Human rights & Social justice and Environment Conservation are the thrust areas of the Fondation. SSF has developed and implemented innovative and effective methods that assure that economic growth and development are initiated amongst the most disadvantaged populations. The foundation's original contributions to empowering women have been incorporated both into public policy and in local action.
Since its inception the foundation has been unique in bringing together women's voice into development debates specially through Panchayat Raj institutions. The foundation was the first NGO to invite the elected women representatives for a meeting and initiate special support services for them.
The Foundation has a unique innovative record in its areas of work which include:
- Social mobilization and capacity development towards strengthening women's participation in the decentralized governance
- Women's economic empowerment through expanding their livelihood bases with required developmental activities
- Basic functional literacy, education and awareness, with special reference to human rights education at all levels
For over the two decades, SSF has implemented various gender development projects. It has been advocating and moving into the mainstream, successful cutting edge approaches to the challenge of economic development ‘ from the bottom up’.
The Foundation owns a botanical garden named 'Serene', which has nurtured more than 350 species of rare plants including medicinal, aromatic & herbal plants. These plants have been utilised for women's livelihood projects.
Over its existence of two decades, the Foundation has become a torchbearer for the development, understanding of gender rights, human rights, cultural & bio diversity.
